Senior Volunteer

Being a Senior Volunteer with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) means participating in a unique program that allows individuals aged 55 and older to assist the CHP in a variety of non-enforcement roles. The program is designed to strengthen the relationship between the community and law enforcement while providing meaningful opportunities for seniors to contribute their time, skills, and experience to public service.

Key Responsibilities

Senior Volunteers support the CHP by performing tasks that free up officers to focus on enforcement and public safety. These responsibilities may include:

  • Administrative Support: Assisting with clerical duties, filing, and data entry at CHP offices.
  • Public Outreach: Supporting community programs, including child safety seat inspections, senior driving education, and bicycle safety workshops.
  • Traffic Assistance: Helping with traffic control at special events or emergency situations, such as road closures or accidents.
  • Vehicle Maintenance Checks: Conducting visual inspections of CHP vehicles and reporting issues.
  • Patrolling in Volunteer Vehicles: Driving designated routes to observe and report safety concerns, such as hazards or abandoned vehicles.
  • Educational Presentations: Delivering presentations to schools, senior centers, or community groups on traffic safety topics.

Benefits of Volunteering

  • Skill Development: Enhance administrative, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Community Impact: Contribute to safer roadways and more informed communities.
  • Social Engagement: Build relationships with law enforcement professionals and other volunteers.
  • Recognition: Volunteers are often recognized for their service with awards, events, and commendations.
